Elsevier Purchase Expands OhioLINK Journal Offerings by 3.4 Million Articles

Ohio’s college students and researchers will now have access to more than 3.4 million additional articles from Elsevier, a highly regarded publisher in the fields of science and engineering with titles including “The Lancet” and “Nanomedicine: Nanotechnology, Biology and Medicine.” Though OhioLINK member libraries have had access to nearly 2,400 Elsevier journals previously, this collection includes historic backfiles, allowing Ohio’s academic community to search for and cite past works and knowledge.

The acquisition of these backfiles has been a top priority for OhioLINK over the last three years, culminating in the state Controlling Board’s November 22, 2010, approval of purchase. The deal was officially finished today.

“This purchase speaks to the hard work and dedication of the OhioLINK community,” says Eric Fingerhut, Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents. “When it became clear these materials would help accelerate science and engineering research throughout the state, the community came together to put the resources in the hands of the students and faculty who need them.”

The addition of these files was made possible by funds from both the Ohio Board of Regents and contributions from all member institutions.

UPDATE: Scholarly and Reference Section of the EBC search restored

Update: As of early Sunday morning, we have completed reindexing the Scholarly and Reference Collection in the EBC. We are continuing to test the index for any remaining problems, but at this point searching has been restored.

On Friday morning, we suffered a failure of the index for the Scholarly and Reference (S&R) Section of the Electronic Book Center. Working with the system engineers at OARnet, we determined that the index had been corrupted to an extent that did not allow for an easy fix of the existing index. A complete re-index of the data was initiated and is currently underway. It is estimated that the re-indexing process will run through the night into Saturday.

We will post updates on the status of the S&R index recovery to the usual OhioLINK mail lists and to our Facebook and Twitter accounts as more information becomes available.

Please note that the American and English Literature Section of the EBC is still working normally and it is still possible to search Safari, Netlibrary and Humanities E-books (if licensed).

We apologize for this interruption in service and we are working to ensure that it is resolved as quickly as possible.

New OhioLINK Catalog Interface

OhioLINK today released an update user interface for our library catalog.

The changes to the catalog are concentrated on the look and feel of the interface. No changes have been made to its indexing or fundamental functionality.

Some features to note:

  • the Library Holdings and Table of Contents boxes may now be minimized by clicking on the Hide link in the upper right of the box
  • when possible, based on the metadata in the record, a link to the electronic version of content appears on the results list. To see examples of this you can do a keyword search on Hathi Trust, or journal american history
  • action oriented buttons have been given different colors to make them stand out to the user

The OhioLINK Library Catalog is available at olc1.ohiolink.edu.
