Title: Fruit Hill, October 1st, 1824. Major James Kilgore. Dear Sir--Agreeably to your request and my promise, I hasten to give a brief, but faithful account of the proceedings of the Court Marshal, and the execution [ for desertion] of the five soldiers, at the cantonment, above Chillicothe, in 1814, so far as I can now recollect them. … Very respectfully, your obedient servant, Duncan M'Arthur. … Having understood that General M'Arthur has been subjected to censure, on account of the execution of five deserters in Chillicothe, in 1814, I deem it an act of justice to that gentleman to submit the following facts to the consideration of the public. … (Signed) Batteal Harrison, Late Captain United States' army.
