Morgan Bibliography of Ohio Imprints, 1796–1850

Author: Van Waters, George.

Title: The Poetical Geography, Designed to Accompany Outline Maps or School Atlases. To Which Are Added the Rules of Arithmetic in Rhyme. By George Van Waters. [Six lines in verse]

Imprint: [Cincinnati]: Published at Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Hartford, New York, and Boston., 1849.

Description: 72 p. ill. ; 23 cm.

Notes:

This amazing book contains verse on every imaginable geographical subject. In his Preface, Van Waters speaks of the "poverty of memory." It is difficult to remember thousands of names and places. By putting geography to verse and the rules of arithmetic, one could remember all those geographical locations. The book was sold by subscription. The cover reads: "Sold by Subscription, and not to be obtained at any Bookstore in the U.S." This accounts for the five cities listed as published in although this is a genuine Ohio imprint. It was copyrighted in Ohio, stereotyped in Cincinnati by James & Co. and printed by J.A. & U.P. James' Steam Press.

"James & Co. stereotypers, Cincinnati. J.A. & U.P. James' steam press."--verso of title page.

M.C. Younglove & Co., Cleveland, printed another edition from the same stereotype plates in 1849. (Morgan 10117)
