Notes:

Foster's "To The Reader" on the next to the last page is informative, entertaining and undoubtedly intended to help the sales of the book. He enjoins the reader to follow carefully his six rules when using this first edition. First, he cautions one not to denounce anything before it is tried; second, to follow the directions exactly; third, to share not the book "as every person is able to buy and have one of his or her own;" fourth, to give the remedies time to work before trying another; fifth, to give aid to the poor who are sick at no charge; and lastly, to further the general reformation in medical science through the strict adherence to the directions in the book which will result in good health by which means the reader will be able "to slide gently along the channel of life, and live to be a comfort and support to their families, and be thankful that they ever saw the little book, entitled, the North American Indian Doctor."
